In Paris, the Americans and Vietnamese are negotiating the end to the Vietnam War. Knowing the assassination of Trask occurs in Paris, Charles and Erik board a private plane with Beast and Wolverine in order to intercept Mystique where Charles and Erik argue over how they each abandoned each other. Meanwhile in Saigon, Mystique prevents a young William Stryker from appropriating a group of mutant American GIs (which include Havok, Toad, Ink, and Spike). In Washington DC, Trask unsuccessfully lobbies Congress for approval for his Sentinel program. They do this with the help of Peter Maximoff, a mutant who can move blindingly fast.
Kennedy, out of a prison cell a hundred floors beneath the Pentagon. Wolverine convinces Charles to break Erik, who was convicted of murdering John F. Charles has lost his telepathic powers from taking a serum in order to allow him walk again. Most of his original X-Men are dead, which has left Charles a broken man. He travels to Charles’ mansion, where he encounters the young Hank McCoy and a disheveled Charles. Wolverine wakes up in 1973 in his younger body. Charles advises Logan to seek out his younger self for aid. Mystique will be captured and her mutant powers will be reverse-engineered and used to create the formidable Sentinels of the future. That assassination caused the chain of events that led to this dark future. They hatch a plan to send Wolverine’s consciousness back in time to prevent Mystique from murdering Bolivar Trask, the lead designer of the Sentinels. The X-Men rendezvous with Magneto and Professor X in a monastery in China. A small band of X-Men manage to evade the Sentinels thanks to the powers of Kitty Pryde, who has the ability to project a person’s consciousness back in time to deliver warnings. They also oppress the human population, as regular humans harbor the genes that can lead to mutant offspring.
